See you there.
Good turnout for club day meant we were able to have a look at lots of players to see where people are likely to be playing this season.
Training starts properly from Wednesday/Thursday. Quite a few people have already sorted out their membership - if you're not one of them get it done. Captains will not be able to select non-members. Thanks, GP The Davis Wood League has released fixtures for next season. Despite our appeal, the Men's 1s will be playing in Marches 1 next season. See the fixtures at .

There's even a picture! Gwent Hockey Club’s men drew a veil over their league season, with a pair of games that summed up the year.
The first team faced a dynamic Cheltenham B at Cwmbran Stadium, and goals flowed right from the start. Matthew Stollery’s short corner started things off, then following Cheltenham taking the lead, he struck again in controversial style. While Cheltenham were seeking an explanation for a free hit awarded against them on the edge of the Gwent D, Gareth Price passed 20 yards to Stollery, who brushed off a half challenge from the last defender, legged it to the opposite end and rounded the keeper. Dominic Ballisat burst in to the D to get Gwent’s third, but from there, it was all Cheltenham as they took control and ran out 10-3 winners. Relegation will come as welcome relief for Gwent after a torrid season. The Men’s seconds ended their successful season in typical style, winning a shoot-out in Abergavenny 4-3. Jamie Evans scored two, Callum Brown and Ben Samuel the others. The win secured a third place finish in the division, just two points short of the promotion places. Newport Gwent Ladies winning streak came to an end in unusual circumstances – their match at Barry was abandoned due to hail and high winds! The ladies second team hosted fellow promotion candidates Presteigne knowing they needed a win to give themselves a chance of finishing top of the division. A poor start saw them turn around at half time trailing 3-1, with only Olivia Ashill’s goal for comfort. But a battling second half performance – cheered on by the home supporters, saw the game come alive. Aimee Clark, pulled one back for Gwent, only to see Presteigne grab a fourth. But Hannah Cozens’ cool penalty flick and Becki Watkins equaliser secured the draw. Gwent are top by one point, with one game to play, but Presteigne have a game in hand and remain favourites to top the division. All Under 16s get in free! The ladies of Gwent Hockey Club had waited 12 months for the moment, which arrived with a trill on the whistle to finish their game on Saturday.
A 3-0 win over visitors Dinefwr, ensured Newport Gwent Ladies' will take their place in the top flight of South Wales hockey next season. The win itself was routine - Gwent domination, miserly defence, and the build up of pressure until the goals start going in. Hannah Cozens scored two in an outstanding personal display, Alice Mundy deflected in the third. Last year, the team missed out on promotion on goal difference, so to be crowned champions with three games still to play will be particularly sweet. The ladies seconds - who had confirmed their promotion last week with a win over Cardiff University - followed it up with a 4-3 away at Cardiff Met. Goals courtesy of Bethan Doughty, Rachel Hillier and two from Aimee Clark. On Sunday, in the semi-final of the 2nd XI cup against Penary, Ffion Llewellyn equalised from a second half short corner. to take the game in to extra-time. But after a goal-free extra-time and a tense penalty shoot out, it was the Penarth team who were celebrating a narrow win, over a Gwent teams three divisions below them in the league. It wasn't just the Gwent women enjoying the end of season celebrations. Gwent's men travelled to Gloucester City A, and recorded their first away win of the season 3-1. Matthew Stollery grabbed all the goals - including a short corner which rocketed in to the roof of the net. But the defensive display was the key to the win, with Andy Turner pulling off some crucial saves, and Gavin Evans, John Dunn, Owen Harris and Dominic Ballasat holding out under a second half Gloucester seige. The men's seconds ended the unbeaten season-long run of Swansea University A with a magnificent 2-1 win. Callum Brown and Steve Boden got the goals, after the students had taken an early lead. But other results mean their mathematical chance of promotion has finally disappeared. Travelling to promotion rivals Whitchurch Saints, the ladies knew a win would push them clear of the chasing pack in South Wales Premier 2. Despite dominating the early possession, Gwent struggled to find a way through the Whitchurch defence. With five minutes remaining it looked as if the game would end scoreless, but Stevie Marie Jones found some space out wide, and her cross was deflected home by Kathryn Dunn for a 1-0 Gwent win. Title rivals Haverfordwest could only draw at the weekend, so Gwent now need just one more win in their remaining four games to be crowned champions and secure promotion to the top flight. No need for further wins for the second team. They secured the second promotion spot in Division 2, with a clinical 4-0 win over Cardiff University thirds. Olivia Ashill opened the scoring in the first half, player of the match Rachel Hillier grabbed a couple after half time before Fleur Atkins finished things off from a short corner. Gwent’s Men went in at half time in their home game against Llan & Caerphilly struggling to believe they were 3-0 down. Three mistakes deep in their own half, had seen the visitors capitalise, in an otherwise evenly matched game. But in the second half, Gwent started to dominate and put together some pleasing hockey. Gareth Price started the comeback, deflecting in Tim Miller’s crash-ball to the near post. Miller grabbed the second when the goalkeeper misjudged the flight of the ball, and his shot crept inside the far past. Matthew Stollery tied things up with five minutes left, but for all their pressure, Gwent couldn’t force the winner. Gwent B travelled to Carew A, and won 1-0.
